Theater Chemnitz is bringing the novel "Rummelplatz" by Chemnitz-born writer Werner Bräunig to the stage. The starting point is his novel of the same name, which has been adapted for the stage by German musician and composer Ludger Vollmer and German writer Jenny Erpenbeck.
Due to his unvarnished realism, author Werner Bräunig was targeted by the SED regime. He broke down as a result, but his big question remains: How do people become shapers of society? The opera addresses how people relate to social conditions, the political system and the thoughts and moods of their time.
The project is complemented by a writing workshop between Chemnitz and the Czech city of Ustí nad Labem as well as a conference that embeds the novel in historical and current contexts. The work will be premiered on September 20, 2025 at the Chemnitz Opera House. The first follow-up dates have already been announced.
