Three princesses, three interventions, three dates
Three princesses, their lives and Germany's oldest castle - the stories of three medieval princesses come to the fore in stages at Albrechtsburg Castle in Meissen. Under the title "System relevant! Princesses of the Middle Ages", guests will learn about the roles played by noble women. Katharina von Braunschweig-Lüneburg, the first Saxon electress, her daughter Katharina von Brandenburg and Anna von Sachsen will be presented. It shows how they established their networks, exercised power, traveled and served their dynasties in different ways. The central message: these women were systemically relevant and made history. Katharina von Braunschweig-Lüneburg (1395-1442) will kick things off on September 11, 2025 . In the Great Hall and the Women's Room of Albrechtsburg Castle, visitors can find out how she supported her husband in government affairs or raised armies. Biographies are presented at a media station. In the reading corner, there are graphic novels and non-fiction books that deal with the current situation of gender equality. A quartet game is also available. The second intervention will start on March 8, 2026, International Women's Day. It will conclude on May 29, 2026.
Germany-wide joint project opens up new perspectives
The so-called interventions at Albrechtsburg Castle Meissen - i.e. the deliberate interruption of the normal tour, the expected museum experience - are part of a joint project. Initiated by the Bavarian Palace Administration, it is entitled "Wirksam. Women's Networks of the Hohenzollern". Visitors will encounter women's stories from the 15th century at a total of ten locations in Germany and Italy. The project shows that princesses of the late Middle Ages took on political and social responsibility. This has been little known and communicated until now and breaks down the previous role model of women. Their work can be experienced at the historical sites themselves. Events, presentations and publications introduce spirited, intelligent, self-confident women from four generations.
