The festival kicks off on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 09:00 and invites visitors to explore the largest still-functioning steam locomotive depot in Europe.
Guests will have the opportunity to experience the fascinating world of railroads until Sunday. The highlights undoubtedly include the 60 or so locomotives on display, which are testimonies to bygone eras and technical masterpieces. Particularly impressive are the steam locomotive-hauled special train rides on the historic museum train, which evoke nostalgic memories of past journeys.
The biggest highlight for visitors will be the large locomotive parade on both Saturday and Sunday. Operational locomotives will drive past visitors on the parade track.
In addition to a customs railway layout, light railway rides, bouncy castle and model railway exchange, there will of course be plenty to eat and drink on all days. Children will also get their money's worth - by the way: admission for children accompanied by adults is free on all days!
The Chemnitz Heizhausfest thus offers a unique opportunity to experience the past, present and future of the railroad up close and to be inspired by the fascination of this fascinating industry.
Special theme: 125 years of the Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf depot
The Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf railroad depot is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2025. Since its foundation in 1900, it has been an important location for the maintenance and operation of steam locomotives in Chemnitz. To mark the anniversary, we are showing you a small special exhibition on the history of the depot - from the imperial era to the Reichsbahn and its current use as a museum.
The Saxony-Franconia Main Line is also celebrating another small anniversary, as it celebrates 60 years of operation in electric traction this year.
