"Saxon Central Uplands" long-distance cycle route Rugged idyll with a gentle character

Warmth and a sense of home on the one hand, wild romance on the other. The highest region in the Free State of Saxony also offers a wide variety of scenery on the "Saxon Central Uplands" long-distance cycle route: Nature lovers will go into raptures at the idyllic forest and mountain meadows, floodplains and river valleys. Art and culture lovers, on the other hand, are fascinated by the traditional craftsmanship and the numerous traces of history.

The route is exciting and varied: from Plauen along the Vogtland, the Elstergebirge, the Erzgebirge, Saxon Switzerland, the Lusatian Highlands and the Zittau Mountains to Zittau itself. The entire "Saxon Central Uplands" route, known as the "I-6" long-distance cycle route, covers around 500 kilometers.

National cycling fun with international options

244 kilometers between Reinhardtsdorf-Schöna and Eibenstock have had uniform and consistent markings since autumn 2014. A bright orange cycling symbol shows hikers the way along roads and paved forest paths.

Educational, spa and short breaks on two wheels

There are plenty of highlights on the "Saxon Central Uplands" I-6 long-distance cycle route - and at all levels. At the very top, on the peaks of the hills and mountains, a number of towers invite you to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views. These can be built towers, such as the Bismarck Tower near Berggießhübel, or the one on the 824-metre-high Geisingberg. In contrast, natural rock towers can be found near Rosenthal-Bielatal.

Show mines, such as those in Marienberg, Altenberg and Bad Gottleuba, provide a deep insight into the mining history of the region as well as its influence on the surrounding landscape. Historically significant places and architectural gems, including Schwarzenberg Castle and the state's largest late Gothic hall church in Annaberg-Buchholz, are also along the way.

In between: fun and adventure, such as in Eibenstock, Seiffen or Altenberg. And again and again sensational natural wonders, such as Saxony's oldest and warmest healing spring in Wolkenstein, the rocky area in Rosenthal-Bielatal or the "organ pipes" on Scheibenberg.

Ore Mountains cycle route The ridge on the Bohemian side

The "Erzgebirgsmagistrale" is around 250 kilometers long in total. It starts in Cheb (Eger) in the west and from there crosses the entire north-western part of the Czech Republic to Děčín (Tetschen) in the east.

Nature, history and two-wheeled fun at its best - the long-distance cycle route "Krušnohorská magistrála" číslo (č.) 23 ("Ore Mountains Magistrála" number 23) is all of this. It begins in the west in Cheb, or more precisely near the Skalka u Chebu dam. It then leads through the time-honored spa town of Františkovy Lázně to Kraslice, from where there is a steep climb to the ridge. The route continues to Horní Blatná, a prime example of a mountain town complex that clearly demonstrates how such areas were planned and built in the 16th century.

At the top of the 1,043-metre-high Blatenský vrch (Plattenberg), the "Zitina rozhledna" observation tower offers a fantastic panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. Exciting and revealing relics of the former tin mining industry can also be discovered here, such as two potholes and the twelve-kilometre-long, water-bearing Blatenský příkop (Plattner Kunstgraben).

Sporty can sometimes also be comfortable

Another literal highlight on the main route is Boží Dar (Gottesgab). At 1,028 meters above sea level, the town is the highest in Central Europe. Czech cross-country skier Lukáš Bauer, who brought home three medals from the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics, also lives here.

If you are looking for relaxation, this is also the right place for you. The area, with its three-kilometre-long nature trail through the Božídarské rašeliniště peat bog, is simply ideal for relaxing and letting go.

Once you've recharged your batteries, you can take a few steps further up. While Saxony's highest peak, the Fichtelberg, stands at an impressive 1,215 meters, its Czech counterpart, the Klínovec (Keilberg), is even closer to heaven. At 1,244 meters, it is the highest in the Ore Mountains. Once you have conquered it, the other sections on the ridge are much easier. If you are curious about history, for example, you can make a short stop along the way in Měděnec (Kupferberg) and visit the Panny Marie Pomocné (Maria-Hilf) mining gallery.

From the legendary mosquito tower and other gods

The route then continues in stages along the Přísečnice dam to Hora Svatého Šebestiána (St. Sebastian's Hill) on the German-Czech border. - This is close enough to touch several times along the entire route. - The areas around Klíny (Göhren), Nové Město (Neustadt) and Mikulov (Niklasberg), which are now on the route, will particularly appeal to cyclists who are also winter sports enthusiasts.

The next dam on the main route, or rather its hollow dam, is that of Fláje. This impressive engineering structure is the only one of its kind in the Czech Republic. And soon another special feature of the country awaits: the oldest and also longest cable car without an intermediate station. It leads up to the summit of Komáří hůrka (Little Mosquito Tower). The mountain, which owes its name to a legend, is one of the highest in the Eastern Ore Mountains at 807 meters. Its location on a steep slope north-east of Krupka (Graupen) and south-east of Cínovec (Bohemian Zinnwald) offers a fantastic view of the České středohoří (Bohemian Central Mountains).

Before the "Erzgebirgsmagistrale" ends in Děčín (Tetschen) and joins the "Elberadweg", there is one last rewarding ascent: the lookout tower, which is enthroned on the summit of the Děčínský Sněžník (Tetschner Schneeberg), is considered one of the most architecturally beautiful in the Czech Republic.
