On the second day of hiking, the next landmark of the Oberlausitzer Bergweg long-distance trail awaits you with the Valtenberg. Upon reaching its 587-meter-high summit, you can enjoy the legendary panoramic views of the long-distance trail from the 25-meter-high observation tower for the first time.
The Valtenberg itself is geologically a huge granite slab. This granite still shapes the Lausitz region today; numerous granite quarries tell of the arduous work of stone breaking. Perhaps this is the origin of the many legends surrounding the Valtenberg?
Across the so-called Three-Country Point – once the northernmost point of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, today the northernmost point of the Czech Republic – you hike through wonderfully peaceful forests down to Sohland an der Spree. Along the route, you repeatedly encounter astronomically interesting rock formations. Some researchers speak of Stone Age cult sites.
