Anyone traveling in the Ore Mountains will still encounter mining traditions everywhere. It has shaped an entire region for more than 800 years. Fascinating mining towns, magnificent churches, tunnels and works of art impressively show what everyday life must have looked like back then. They form a cultural landscape that is unique in Europe, which is why the region was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage title in July 2019. Good luck in the Ore Mountains!
The tour starts at Altenberg station with a detour to the Czech Republic. Via Neurehefeld we pass the Lehnmühle dam and Rauschenbach. A visit to the Neuhausen Nutcracker Museum (the largest nutcracker in the world) is well worthwhile. You should definitely plan a detour to the toy village of Seiffen. The tour continues through the Großhartmanndorf pond landscape, which was heavily influenced by mining. The Augustusburg hunting and pleasure palace rises on a 516 m high quartz porphyry cone and can be seen from afar. The motorcycle museum houses 175 top-class exhibits in an exhibition covering 1,000 square meters that is unique in Europe. The mining town of Feiberg, the next destination on the tour, is Saxony's silver town par excellence. Magnificent patrician houses around one of the most beautiful market squares in Germany, the Obermarkt, still bear witness to the former wealth of silver mining. A visit to St. Mary's Cathedral with its world-famous "Golden Gate" is a must. Not far from the cathedral, you can see the beauty of the underground world for yourself in another way at the restored Freudenstein Castle: in the world's largest mineralogical collection "Terra Mineralia". The tour continues to Dippoldiswalde, affectionately known as "Dipps". The Malter Dam is a recreational area with the Paulsdorf adventure pool, four lidos, two campsites, rowing boat hire, mini golf courses, beach volleyball courts, tennis courts, restaurants and cafés. We recommend swapping your means of transportation for the steam-powered Weißeritz Valley Railway, which runs daily through the Rabenauer Grund to Freital. The fascination of time - experience time at the German Clock Museum in Glashütte. Through the charming Müglitz Valley, on a winding, steadily ascending road, we take the well-known motorcycle route via Börnchen-Liebenau and Liebenau-Lauenstein through Geising to the starting point of our journey.
