Special exhibition "PIRATES!"

W skrócie

They plundered, robbed and murdered in the hunt for booty - the bane and terror of the world's oceans! Or were they noble, courageous buccaneers in search of adventure and freedom? The year 2024 is all about Romanticism on the occasion of the 250th birthday of Caspar David Friedrich, one of the most important representatives of this era. In keeping with this, the PIRATES! exhibition at the Dresden Transport Museum offers an insight into the pirate romance of the past and today. What we supposedly know about pirates today often comes from films, books and computer games. The exhibition therefore explores the question: What is true about pirate romance and what is myth?

Pirates and pirate women have existed since ships sailed the seas. Where trade flourished and there was no protecting power, they made the sea routes unsafe. This is still true today and worldwide.
On board the ships, it didn't matter who you had been before, here the laws were their own. People from different countries lived together in close quarters. Some sailed on behalf of kings and queens, some were driven to sea by necessity or a thirst for adventure and others by the hope of quick riches.

The exhibition "PIRATES!" takes you from 21 March 2024 to 5 January 2025 on board the ships, sailing with you hundreds of years back in time, to China, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, but also to the present day in the Gulf of Aden. She introduces you to celebrities such as Blackbeard and Grace O'Malley, as well as a lesser-known Dresden pirate, and challenges common perceptions of pirates and their lives.

And where there are pirates, there must be treasure. Go in search of it with your whole family and solve tricky tasks along the way.
