Stage free for Johann Sebastian Bach: New special exhibition at the Bach Museum Leipzig

To mark the anniversary of "Bach300 - 300 years of Bach in Leipzig", the Bach Museum Leipzig is presenting the three-part special exhibition "Stage free for Johann Sebastian Bach". The first part will open on 21 March 2023 at 5 pm, just in time for Johann Sebastian Bach's 338th birthday. It will illuminate Bach's "Church Music in Honour of God" until 9 July 2023.
When Bach became cantor of St Thomas' Church in Leipzig in 1723, a new chapter in music history began. For 27 years, he shaped the musical life of the city. From Leipzig, his works began their triumphal march into the world.
The new special exhibition at the Bach Museum Leipzig invites you to immerse yourself in Bach's musical cosmos. It decodes complex works such as the St Matthew Passion and the Goldberg Variations in an understandable way and uses numerous sound examples, hands-on stations, games and puzzles to encourage visitors to engage with Bach's music. 3D audio plays allow you to take part in Bach's life up close. The exhibition shows how Bach's work inspired composers such as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Gustav Mahler, the Beatles and the singer Lady Gaga, as well as reflections of his works in the visual arts of modern times.
The exhibition enters into a dialogue with the new Bach Parcours of the Leipzig City History Museum, which will open on 21 April 2023 and looks at Bach's work from the perspective of his Leipzig employers. Themed guided tours and tours of both museums, concerts and workshops for children and young people will accompany the exhibition.

The second part of the exhibition, "In Search of Perfection", will be on display from 22 July to 5 November 2023.
The third part, "Bach's Music Becomes a Model", will then open from 16 November 2023 to 24 March 2024.

Bach's oeuvre has influenced artists of very different styles and led them down new paths of composition. But how did Bach's music become a model? The final third act of the anniversary exhibition "Clear the stage for J. S. Bach" is dedicated to this question. Starting with characteristic features of his compositional art - the strong full voices or the secrets of his harmonies - the show explores the timeless and boundless impact of Bach's music: from Beethoven's Great Fugue to Berg's Violin Concerto and Hindemith's Ludus tonalis to the jazz arrangements of Jacques Loussier. Interactive stations and games bring to life how Bach's compositions became global hits and inspired stars such as the Beatles, Sting and Lady Gaga.
